When the story becomes a song
Freedom Sings USA is a non-profit based in Chattanooga Tennessee. We pair professional songwriters with veterans, active military and their families to help them tell their stories through song.
Donovan Chapman brings singer/songwriter experience with having charted four singles in the Top 60 Country Music Billboard Charts with his “House Like That” peaking at forty-two. Donovan also recorded studio albums with Curb Records and Category 5 Records.
I grew up south of Chattanooga in a little neighborhood called Saint Elmo, just north of the Georgia border where Lookout Mountain crosses into Tennessee. After a failed attempt at college—sure, I graduated but my grades weren't anything to brag about—I rushed to the recruiter and signed my commission as an armor officer, to lead men into battle on chariots of steel.LEARN MORE
Airman Sidney Wiseman: The story of how we met a 100 year old WWII Veteran
Retired U.S. Army Captain Douglas Long describes working with Freedom Sings USA on his own song and healing. Captain Long also connected us with WWII veteran Airman Sidney Wiseman whose story we also wrote into a song which was presented to Wiseman on his birthday, July 17th.
Let Freedom Sing: Songwriting Program for Veterans Makes Post-Pandemic Return
Next week, the nonprofit Freedom Sings USA will return to Montrose for Freedom Sings USA Colorado, a music therapy program that pairs veterans of the military with veteran songwriters. The program begins with a two-day retreat during which songwriters work with the selected veterans to set their stories to music. After, the community can hear those stories — often for the first time, publicly — at a free concert.
"Freedom Sings USA has provided a safe environment amongst veterans to put memories and emotion to song with the gracious help of the Nashville Songwriters."
Veterans can heal through the power of music.
Whether you're a veteran looking for a safe place to share your story, a songwriter who wants to help give a voice to those who have served, or an organization looking to support our efforts, we invite you to connect with us and find out how to get started.
