Lt. Col. Nate Brookshire Joins FSUSA News Team

Lt. Col. Nate Brookshire joins the FSUSA News Team as a special features contributor.

WELCOME LT. COL. NATE BROOKSHIRE TO THE FSUSA NEWS TEAM!
FSUSA is happy to welcome Nate to our mix of contributors. He will be joining the FSUSA News Team as a special features contributor. Nate is actively serving, based in KS. He is co-author of the historical-fiction novel, “Hidden Wounds: A Soldier’s Burden” (w/ Marius Tecoanta, 2010) and is in-production on “Hidden Wounds: The Documentary.”

Nate has served over 31 years in the Army, starting as a Private, currently serving as Lieutenant Colonel. He is an advocate for facilitating interim and long-term mental health care for veterans and their families. In his book (“Hidden Wounds: A Soldier’s Burden”), fictional characters discuss the complex topics of suicide, survivor’s guilt, addiction and moral injury.

The book project has brought attention to the non-profit HiddenWounds.org, a successful grass-roots organization that assists in reducing barriers to access to mental health care.

Nate became interested in Freedom Sings USA while working on the production of his feature-length documentary, “Hidden Wounds: The Documentary.” Shortly after making contact, Nate joined a weekly class and, working with Steve Dean and Don Goodman (FSUSA co-founders and national music directors) along with a class of fellow vets, he opened up to the group to share his story.

His song (“Say Their Name”) is a tribute to those who have fallen and those who have succumbed to the “invisible wounds” of war – the moral and mental wounds of combat that sometimes go unnoticed until far too late.

Nate says that he found the process of creating a song with fellow veterans and his FSUSA songwriting coaches both rewarding and healing.

“I’m looking forward to being a part of Freedom Sings USA and helping other veterans find ways to cope with the pain and trauma of combat,” Nate says. “I’ve seen too many people fall through the cracks. We need programs like FreedomSingsUSA.org and HiddenWounds.org to be there as a safety net.”
